How Mineral SPF Earned Its Bad Reputation

Why Mineral SPF Looked the Way It Did
Zinc oxide is the active ingredient in mineral suncare. It sits on the surface of skin and physically reflects UV rays rather than absorbing them, providing broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
That same surface-sitting behavior is what caused the texture problems. Zinc oxide particles in suspension tend to clump over time, which shows up as visible white streaks when the product hits skin. Older formulas used larger, unrefined particles that scattered visible light alongside UV light. The result was thick, opaque, and hard to blend on most skin tones.
White cast is a formulation issue. For a long time, science just hadn't caught up to that.
The Nano Tradeoff
To reduce white cast, many brands moved to nano-sized zinc oxide particles, smaller than 100 nanometers and much less visible on skin. The texture improved. But smaller particles react more readily to UV radiation, which raises questions about free radical generation. Research on the full implications is still ongoing, and non-nano zinc oxide has become the standard for formulas where skin safety is the priority.
So the old mineral SPF looked terrible. The workaround looked better but came with its own open questions. Neither was a great option for people who just wanted reliable, wearable daily protection.

Most mineral SPF formulas start with zinc powder. It's less potent, so more of it is needed to reach meaningful protection levels. More zinc in the formula means more visible white cast. It's a tradeoff most brands have just accepted.
