Beyond UV: Why Your SPF Should Handle Pollution Too

Sun isn't the only thing your skin deals with every day. Pollution and blue light reach it too—and most SPF formulas aren't built to handle either one.

What SPF Covers & What It Doesn't

SPF measures protection against UVB rays, which are the shorter wavelength UV rays most responsible for sunburn. UVA rays, which penetrate deeper and play a larger role in wrinkles and skin cancer risk, are only covered if a product is also labeled broad-spectrum.

Neither of those ratings says anything about pollution or blue light. Pollution particles and high-energy visible (HEV) light, sometimes called blue light, both reach skin throughout a normal day—and neither is part of the standard SPF or broad-spectrum rating.

How Pollution Affects Skin

Pollution particles trigger the same basic process as UV exposure: free radicals. A study published by the National Institutes of Health explains that skin exposed to air, solar radiation, and environmental pollutants generates free radicals that damage collagen, elastin, and skin cell DNA over time.

The effect is measurable. Research reviewed by the NIH found that facial pigment spots increased by more than 20% in areas with high particulate matter concentrations, compared to lower-pollution areas. That kind of damage builds up the same way sun damage does: slowly and mostly without you noticing day to day.

Antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, niacinamide, and green tea extract help offset this by neutralizing free radicals before they cause damage.

Shining a Light on Blue Light & SPF

Most people associate blue light with screens, but the sun is the biggest source of it. Blue light, also called high-energy visible (HEV) light, sits in the 400 to 500 nanometer range, right next to UVA on the light spectrum.

HEV light penetrates deeper into the skin than UVB rays and can make existing dark spots and redness more noticeable. That effect shows up more in deeper skin tones since blue light triggers extra melanin production, the same process behind hyperpigmentation and melasma.

Most blue light exposure comes from the sun, not screens. That makes a daily SPF a better place to block it than a screen filter.
